How to Change Your Ringtone in Microsoft Teams (Yes, It’s Possible!)

I'm full stack developer. JavaScript & Python enthusiast. I like to build software projects using JavaScript & Python.

If you spend a lot of your day in Microsoft Teams, that default ringtone can start to feel a little… repetitive. Whether you're working from home or in the office, the sound of an incoming call can quickly become just background noise — unless you personalize it.

Luckily, Microsoft Teams gives you the option to change your ringtone, and it only takes a few clicks. Here's how you can make that change — whether you're using the desktop app or Teams on your phone.

🎧 Changing the Ringtone in Microsoft Teams on Desktop

Most of us are using Teams on our laptop or PC during work hours. If you're looking to switch things up, here's how:

  1. Open Microsoft Teams.
Launch the app and sign in if you haven't already.

  2. Go to Settings.
Click on three dots next to your profile picture or initials in the top-right corner. From the dropdown menu, select Settings.

  3. Navigate to Notifications.
In the left-hand menu, click on Calls or Sounds category (depending on your version of Teams). Scroll down and go to Choose a ringtone section.

  4. Pick Your Sound.
Click the dropdown “Calls for you” and choose from the available options. Microsoft offers a few built-in tones to pick from. Sadly, you can't upload your own ringtone — at least not yet.

  5. Done!
Once you've selected your preferred sound, you're all set. No need to save — Teams will remember your choice.

📱 Changing the Ringtone on Microsoft Teams Mobile (iOS & Android)

If you're using Teams on your phone, changing the ringtone is a bit trickier — because Teams generally uses your phone’s default ringtone settings.

Here's what you can do:

For Android:

  1. Open Settings on your phone.

  2. Go to Sounds and vibration.

  3. Tap Ringtone and pick the tone you want.

  4. Teams calls will usually follow this default unless overridden by app-specific settings.

For iPhone:

  1. Open the Settings app.

  2. Tap Sounds & Haptics.

  3. Under Sounds and Vibration Patterns, choose Ringtone.

  4. Select your preferred tone.

⚠️ Note: Teams doesn’t currently support custom ringtone settings within the mobile app itself, so it will rely on your device’s defaults.

🔧 Bonus: Are You an Admin?

If you're managing Teams for an entire organization, you might have access to more advanced configuration tools via the Microsoft Teams Admin Center. While there’s no native option to push specific ringtones across users yet, Microsoft may expand ringtone customization options in future updates.

Final Thoughts

Customizing your Teams ringtone isn’t just about personal preference — it can actually help you react faster to calls and keep your digital workspace feeling a bit more like your own.

It’s a small change, but it can make a big difference in your day-to-day flow. So go ahead, ditch that default ringtone and choose something that won’t make you groan every time a call comes in.
